Clio IV and R-Link: they’re connected!

Clio IV and R-Link: they’re connected!

Back in 1995, you may remember, Renault launched onboard navigation with Carminat. In 2001 the system was installed in Clio II, making it widely available – a real revolution! Eleven years later, it's the turn of Clio IV to take on board the latest in connectivity.

Clio IV, to be launched later this year in the “always online” era of smartphones and touch screens, will stage its own digital revolution by hooking up to the R-Link onboard tablet, which was inspired by all those new technologies. Its assets include: user-friendliness: navigation is simple, with functions accessible through the touch screen, steering-wheel controls or voice commands, connectivity: fast and reliable access to the Internet and all integral functions: (navigation, multimedia, telephony, services and vehicle information), the R-Link Store: customers will be able to download about 50 apps from launch, and many more will follow. All will be available online from the My Renault customer portal, which can already be accessed in 15 countries. Many aspects of the vehicle are covered: order monitoring, maintenance, services (varying slightly depending on the country), exclusive offers… As well as buying apps, customers can watch tutorials to help them make the most of the R-Link tablet, even before their car is delivered.

Those who already own a tablet, smartphone or GPS will find that R-Link is to those tools what integral satnav was to the first GPS units you used to put on the dashboard and which often ended up on the passenger seat… As R-Link was designed for cars, in terms of both ergonomy and usage, it’s the tablet that adapts to the driver rather than vice versa.

    BACK TO THE FUTURE….

Thirty years ago, at the 1982 Paris Motor Show, Renault presented an R20 equipped with… a cathode ray tube TV screen. That same year the Atlas car software project, managed by Renault and the French broadcasting authority, was launched. In 1986 Renault organised a joint project between Philips (and its Carin project), Sagem (Minerve) and Atlas, resulting in the name Car-min-at. After several years of research, investment and prototypes, Renault had a real onboard navigation system available as an option in 1995. In 2008 Renault chose TomTom® as its partner, and the next year Carminat TomTom® was launched, followed by Carminat TomTom® Live, which was connected to the Internet, in 2010.
